Cardiac emergencies, including acute myocardial infarction (MI), cardiac arrest, and arrhythmias, require immediate intervention to prevent mortality and long-term complications (American Heart Association [AHA], 2024). Nurses play a central role in the management of cardiac emergencies, and their confidence in managing these cases directly influences patient outcomes. Clinical training equips nurses with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform life-saving interventions such as CPR, defibrillation, and drug administration during a cardiac emergency (Bassey et al., 2024).
Recent studies indicate that nurses with advanced clinical training in cardiac emergency care are more confident and competent in responding to critical situations (Olumide & Eze, 2023). However, many nurses in Nigeria, including those at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, report a lack of sufficient clinical training and experience, which negatively affects their confidence and the quality of care they provide (Ogunleye et al., 2024). Evaluating the impact of clinical training on nurses' confidence in managing cardiac emergencies is crucial to improving care and enhancing patient outcomes.
Inadequate training in cardiac emergency management is a major challenge for nurses in Nigeria, contributing to lower levels of confidence and delays in emergency response (Ajibade & Hassan, 2024). Although nurses at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital receive training, gaps in clinical training, especially in handling acute cardiac emergencies, hinder their ability to manage these critical situations effectively (Eze & Bassey, 2023). This study aims to evaluate the impact of clinical training on nurses' confidence in cardiac emergency management at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
This study will focus on nurses working in emergency and critical care units at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include variability in nurses' prior experience and the availability of training programs.
